Chapter 3: A Dark Mind's Thoughts

Chris Anderson:

It was around 3 PM when I left the building and headed toward the governor's headquarters. The traffic was frustrating, but I managed to arrive by 4:45 PM. “Good evening, Mr. Anderson!” said Megan, the building receptionist, who always seems to have a crush on me. But then again, who can resist my charm?

I am Chris Anderson, a former manager at a government headquarters. I also work with Ivan; I have multiple jobs, which he finds strange since he sticks to just one, leading a rather dull life, in my opinion. We've been best friends since high school, but he’s a workaholic and an avid reader.

As soon as I arrived, I spotted my assistant standing outside my office, looking around until she finally noticed me. "Mr. Anderson, where have you been? Miss Carters has been looking for you and is quite upset. She’s been asking for you for the past two hours." That’s Debbie. She’s young, a fresh graduate, and takes her job too seriously. Honestly, she’s a bit terrified of the boss.

"Yeah, sorry about that. I had an emergency at a friend's place," I casually replied while going through some emails on my phone. "Can you please go and meet her? If you don’t, I’ll be in trouble." She looked so scared; she sometimes reminds me of my little sister, Alyssa, who is around 12 years old. I'm quite close to her, but work has been such a pain that I can't even visit her.

At Debbie's pleading request, I made my way to the CEO's office, Eveline Carters, a terrifying woman in her mid-40s. I’m surprised she hasn’t retired yet. I knocked on the door, and a firm "come in" reply came from inside. As soon as she saw me, fire burned in her eyes. "Mr. Anderson, it seems that you are no longer interested in your job." Jeez, her tone was harsh.

"My apologies, Miss Carters. I had a few things to take care of and lost track of time," I replied sternly. It wasn't that I was afraid of her; I was just applying my political science and business degree here. It felt like such a waste. I was in this job because of that stupid Ivan, who also suspected her, and because of him, I have to do double the work now. But since we both have sisters—and Missy is like my older sister too—I couldn't deny anything Ivan said.

"It’s not like that, Miss Carters. Rest assured, nothing like this will happen again," I stated while trying my best not to laugh at the death glares she had been shooting me since I arrived. Ivan is right; I can never be serious in any situation. After a long silence of her staring at me, she finally spoke. "I have a task for you, and you have until 11 PM tonight to complete it." Is she crazy? Hopefully, the task is easy. Still, I can't predict anything; she is always rough on me for reasons I don't understand.

"11 PM? I will try my best, Miss Carters," I replied. Help! "You better," she shouted, "given the amount I pay you per task and overall per month. Check your email for instructions and major points regarding the task, and MAKE SURE YOU ARE AT WORK ON TIME TOMORROW, AND THIS TASK MUST BE DONE." Yup, she shouted at me; it’s a disgusting habit of hers. "Don’t worry, Miss Carters, everything is under control," I replied sternly, locking eyes in our typical staring competition. "Now, escort yourself out," she commanded.

I laughed so hard when I entered my office and sat down. I have no idea why I found that funny. I sat in my chair, ordered some coffee from the serving robots, and began my work. I opened the email as Miss Carters requested and saw my task; it was about some fortune inheritance related to "George Robert." The first name I saw seemed to indicate he was the next inheritor of the Robert family. But what exactly was the task?

Home Location: 88 Omenwurg West Street, number 35. It seems the guy lives in a wealthy area. Well, it's not like I care—I grew up in a wealthy lawyer's family too. My life choices might have disappointed everyone, but who cares? It's my life, my rules! Anyway, what's up with this guy? What do I have to do? No way! That looks familiar—is that Kyle Robert? I know him; I once fought a case in my father's place for him, and it was a headache!

There was a family picture of the Roberts, and they are quite a large family. No wonder they are always fighting with each other over the wealth inherited from past generations. But what is the task at hand? It seems like a tough job after all. I need to sneak into George's office to collect a black file. That sounds like an easy task—I can get it done in no time. Manipulation does work; I mean, I know the Roberts family's elder daughter, Alexa Roberts. I met her at a bar and had a drink with her. She is quite social, and I bet she trusts people too much. With just some nice acts and compliments, I can easily wrap her around my finger.

I went through some files and emails, which took me about two hours. It was around 7 PM now, and I had two tasks: Hayley and Alexa. This day could definitely become more tiring. I decided to go to the Roberts mansion first since that task won't take long. As for Miss Meuraks, I can easily find her at luxurious bars, even at 2 AM!

Upon reaching the mansion, I was welcomed by a few servants. "Where can I find Miss Alexa Robert?" I asked, trying my best to keep my tone calm yet slightly sharp. The servant directed me to her, and to my surprise, I found her in the kitchen testing her baking skills.

"Miss Alexa?" I inquired in an unusual tone. She lifted her head, and I had to admit, she was drop-dead gorgeous, with dark chocolate-colored eyes, brunette hair, and milky white skin framed by long lashes. I reminded myself not to get distracted; I had seen many beautiful women before.

"Mr. Anderson? How come you are here? Is there anything I can help you with?" she asked in her usual soft tone.

"Well, I was free and thought I would visit you to try your famous Oreo delights since you mentioned them the other day. I’ve been craving something sweet. I know it's sudden, but since you didn’t reply to my text, I came straight here." This felt awkward; she might think I was a bit crazy.

"Sure, Mr. Anderson, why not? By the way, I was just about to work on my books and have a snack, but now I have some company. Fortunately, my family members are away in the Maldives for an event, and it wasn’t essential for me to go, so I decided to skip it."

Well, this makes my task much easier than I thought. She is alone, which means I can carry out my plan and leave without complications. Later, we both sat on the couches in the living room and engaged in some small talk. She was quite talkative, and just as I was about to leave, I heard a loud thud — and as expected, it was Alexa.

I drugged her by pouring an drug inside her coffee, and I started to search the house, and since the servants had already completed their duties, there was no one around. The company's tech experts had jammed the cameras, making the job easier. I had brought some men with me to help search the house, and after hours of searching, I finally found it. Inside the library, there was a secret room hidden behind the shelves. How careless they were to leave a gap between the shelves! Fortunately, I discovered it.

I searched the room and eventually found an FBI case file related to the Carters family—specifically, Eveline Carter's family. I ignored it and didn't bother reading further.

As I was walking toward the exit, I stepped on something and felt it crush under my foot. It turned out to be a piece of glass; something must have broken in there. As a safety manager, a nickname given to me by Ivan, I picked up the shards carefully until I saw a file labeled "Amber Lorden." I just froze.
